This is the last of two suites played after Megan and Chris's wedding. Most of the guests had departed, and i had moved into the nave of the little Lutheran church to play as the newlyweds and wedding party posed for their photographs. I confess: i love weddings. EmmaJoe's Warm-Up IV - performed Live at EmmaJoe's Coffeehouse, in Marquette Michigan USA ... Recap from Warm-Up V: Saturday afternoon, setting up for a recording, a motley crew of Musicians filter in and we jammed. Someone else is playing the bass on this one. That following Monday night, at my regular gig, i played the recording back and layered my flute into the mix -- Live again, of course. This was 3 or 4 years ago, i can't find the Master (which has the notes). Check out the Ephemera podcast where i plan to post some campfire recordings in the near future. I plan to keep this feed populated with performance dates, and put the campfire stuff in the 'found sound' Ephemera podcast. Share and enjoy! ~joan ... EmmaJoe's Warm-Up I - performed Live at EmmaJoe's Coffeehouse, in Marquette Michigan USA ... This began life as a sound check. I was hired by Tom Laverty to record his salsa band at EmmaJoe's Coffeehouse for a Saturday night gig. That Saturday afternoon, as i was setting up, a motley crew of Musicians filtered in and we did a sound check. Once you start jamming you can't stop, so (after the actual first jam, which didn't get recorded), i threw the Tascam CD-RW2000 into record and went up and jammed -- playing the bass line on a keyboard. That following Monday night, at my harp gig, i played the recording back and layered my flute into the mix -- Live again, of course -- with some of the same folk there at my gig, digging the reprise from Saturday afternoon. Dylan might've even been pulling espresso that night (he was a Baristo at EJ's). So, i'm playing the bass line (which set the groove), and the melody. Another self-duet -- but with a great jam-band -- 'The EmmaJoe's Coffeehouse Orchestra' as i've sometimes humourously called us. I can't remember who all were playing, but Dylan (of Nine Volt Hammer) was playing the electric piano part with me on the keyboard (as i was playing a bass part; i haven't played bass guitar since high school), and Robert was doing an excellent job playing drums. This was 3 or 4 years ago -- i think the last year EmmaJoe's was open. {I can't find the Master -- which has the notes.} The only other jam i can find from this session is 'Warm-up V' which i'll post next week. I'll try to find the rest, but this was a few years ago. I'll also try to find the names of all the Musicians so i can give credit where credit is due. {If you're in this recording, please, get in touch with me.} By the way, check out the Ephemera podcast -- where i plan to post some campfire recordings. I'm not exactly sure what i'm going to do, but i'm thinking of keeping this feed populated with performance dates, and put campfire song-swaps and the like in the 'found sound' Ephemera podcast. As always, share and enjoy! ~joan ... Copyright MMIV Joan Heath-Patrie, et al - Creative Commons deed 2.5 = some rights reserved = attribution/commercial use ... http://strandgeist.org

More Rhodes/flute 'self-duet'. Again, this is Live in two 'layers' - first, the Rhodes, Live at EmmaJoe's in 2001, then the flute, Live at EmmaJoe's in 2002. This is Day's Dance (which, in fact, was my first number that night. If you want to know the actual chronology, it went: Day's Dance, January, Evening's Bells, and Morning Aire -- plus a couple that i haven't used in there somewhere. I don't know where the Masters are). - The two mellow numbers i used from this gig have already been posted in my Tranquil Music podcast. They are Tranquil MMVI.36 Evening's Bells, and MMVI.40 Morning Aire. If you'd like to re-assemble them into the order i put them on the Album, arrange them so: January - Morning Aire - Day's Dance - Evening's Bells. - Give me some feedback. Let me know what you'd like to hear. This is a new podcast which hasn't yet decided what it wants to be. Let me know what you think. This is an Encore of a performance from EmmaJoe's about 4 years ago. It's totally different from what i've been putting up for these past 6 weeks. I had thought to let you hear what it really sounds like to play harp in a bar, with the room miked so you can hear the rowdy reality. - Except that about two-thirds of you have bailed from the subscription. Hmm. That's quite fickle. Okay; no more roomy recordings. - So, i'll switch gears, and (aside from avoiding roomy recordings from now on), i'll post some of my Live Rhodes/flute 'self-duet' stuff (which i've carefully produced to temper the harsh reality of playing Live in a noisy Coffeehouse; listen closely though and you'll hear the espresso grinder, the sink, the milk steamer, and a muted bang or crash here and there getting in through the flute mike). It is still definitely Live, even though i have to do these pieces in two 'layers' (as i've never figured out a way to play flute and piano at the same time). But it's still me playing both parts Live. I played my Rhodes stage piano Live first (at an earlier gig) and then my flute Live at a gig about a year later. {I forget the exact dates offhand; maybe i'll find a copy of the CD i produced of it way back when.} - Please leave comments (and give me some feedback). It's an excellent feature which hardly anyone uses. - Copyright MMII Joan Heath-Patrie, Creative Commons deed 2.5 = some rights reserved = attribution/commercial use/share alike. - share and enjoy

no haiku this time. i had to get it posted. sorry about that. (a haiku?) ... And sorry about THAT; i couldn't help myself. It popped into my head, and there was nothing for it but to let it out. I'm just posting the last short suite from this gig because i was having problems with the recorder. This was the first gig for which i used my new M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96, and i couldn't figure out what was wrong with the thing. I lost three sets - a long 40 minute one, and a couple of half-hour ones, and finally resorted to pulling out the MiniDisc recorder so i could get something (this little 10-minute suite). After it was all over, as i was disconnecting everything, i discovered the power cord to the MicroTrack was loose in its wall-wart. It was intermittently connected, and the firmware in the MicroTrack couldn't deal with the concept, and seized-up. {Got that, M-Audio?} So, on the one hand, it was a classic problem: checking the cord to make sure it was plugged in. But on the other hand, with its internal battery, the MicroTrack should have decided to ignore the intermittency from the external power supply. This is what happens when Designers don't live in real life. Sorry for saying that, but i think all Civil Engineers (for example) as part of their required coursework, should have a class in 'homelessness' - for which the coursework would be one semester of living in the street. This principle could be applied to all areas of design, and the world would be a better place for it. {Alternatively, watch our whole society implode someday in some vast cascading firmware sneezure.} ... As alway, enjoy! ~joan ... haiku and music Copyright MMVI Joan Heath-Patrie. Creative Commons deed 2.5 = some rights reserved = attribution/commercial use/share alike - http://strandgeist.com

It's worth doing, and the administrative overhead is low. I play it every year. UUs, Baha'is, and Episcopalians - together (just like bikers, red-necks, and hippies together at a Willie Nelson concert, eh?). All together now... heave, ho!

universe unfolds. for us one song at a time. for music hath charms. ... This is a supplimental feed to 'Tranquil Music by Heath'. This will give me freedom to put up everything. I had a good gig today; this is it. The folks at the Med Center hired me to play their very nice Kawai studio grand in the lobby. I haven't played such a nice piano in years. For the record, this is Live at the Upper Peninsula Medical Center, 2006 November 30, at Noon: an improvisational fantasy on 'Lament for the Lost', 'Swoopy for Derek', and 'Invention, Part Two' - intermodulated, sequed, turned inside-out, broiled, steamed, sauteed, doused with alcohol, set on fire, and served on a libsyn stick. Swoopy and Derek of Skepticality (podcast) honoured me by playing something of mine recently. It inspired me to play this very extended acoustic fantasy - with 'Swoopy for Derek' incorporated into its convoluted texture. So, here it is. I hope you like it. Enjoy. ~heath ...
